Message from our CEO, Deb Saunders
A female humpback whale had become entangled in a spider web of crab traps and lines. She was weighted down by hundreds of pounds of traps that caused her to struggle to stay afloat. She also had hundreds of yards of line rope wrapped around her body, her tail, her torso, a line tugging in her mouth. This is her story of giving gratitude.
A fisherman spotted her just east of the Farallon Islands (outside the Golden Gate) and radioed for help. Within a few hours, the rescue team arrived and determined that she was so badly off, the only way to save her was to dive in and untangle her…. a very dangerous proposition. One slap of the tail could kill a rescuer. They worked for hours with curved knives and eventually freed her.
When she was free, the divers say she swam in what seemed like joyous circles. She then came back to each and every diver, one at a time, nudged them, and pushed gently, thanking them. Some said it was the most incredibly beautiful experience of their lives.
May you be so fortunate to be surrounded by people who will help you get untangled from the things that are binding you and may you always know the joy of giving and receiving gratitude. To all of our friends, supporters, and donors, from our whole team, we want to wish you and your family a healthy and Happy Holiday Season! We have much to be thankful for and your support means the world to us. You make a difference every day in the lives of the people we support and we couldn’t be more grateful.
I hope you enjoy this wonderful story of gratitude.

Featured Success Story
It truly is a wonderful time here at Southern Oregon Aspire with the opening of a new house for our Residential Services. On November 2nd, three of our supported individuals experienced moving day! This house is designed around Dementia and individuals who are needing higher supports due to the natural aging process. The home is run with 24-hour support. We want to extend a huge thank you to Garrison’s Home for providing their Design Team to decorate this house and for a discount on the furniture. Not only do the residents feel at home in this beautiful new house but the staff is grateful for the support of our community partners. Thank you Garrison’s Home!
